White Butterfly Ginger or simply Ginger Lily (Hedychium coronarium) has been blooming all month after the recent rains. It prefers a more shady location with dappled sunlight and moist soil. I’ve even seen these planted in a bog, along with Taro (Colocasia esculenta). One thing I did not know until doing some research was that the white butterfly ginger is the national flower of Cuba.

Love these plants! We used to have some and they crowded themselves out, this fall we were given some new plants and are looking forward to seeing them in the new garden is a higher profile location. Yesterday we visited Duke Gardens and they had 8-10 large patchs of ginger spread about in the 55 acre garden inside Durham, NC. What is with this tiny text? I have to zoom in 3 times to even read it?
This is one of my favorite gingers! I like the way the fragrance wafts across the garden on the breeze.
I tried potting up some hedychium last year to keep over in the greenhouse. This is one of those that dies back and rests, so it was a pot full of nothing above ground all winter. That might be a trick for gardeners where the corms freeze in colder zones: pot up and keep in a place where it won’t freeze through the winter, ready to go back in the ground when the weather warms.

What a great looking ginger or is it a lily? Do the blooms have an aroma?
One of my shell-gingers bloomed earlier this year, quite the surprise! You can see it under the “Looks like…” at the top of my side-bar. The blooms looked just like lychees of all things!
The blooms on this look very striking, and delicate against what looks like rougher foliage. Do the leaves get crispy on the ends in the summer months?
Oh yes, I will be on the look out for this one…I am thinking a dappled shade area under my post oak. Now where was that “must-have” folder located, I am always losing it.
