Green Lizard in the Garden

August 31, 2009
green-lizard-2

I caught a glimpse of this guy running across the driveway. He was kind enough to pose for a picture. He is looking for tasty bugs to eat near by rosemary plant. It is so nice to have butterflies, birds, frogs and insects roaming around. When you do not use pesticides, your garden becomes its [...]

Late Summer Shiners

pink-rain-lily

Pink Rain Lilies Zephyranthes labufarosea are blooming around my garden this week. A few light rains have encouraged them to push up some pretty petals. Rain Lilies has a habit of showing off in masse, which makes them such a welcome addition to the garden. All at once, the little bulbs burst into color, usually [...]

soil-report

The soil samples I sent to the lab for testing is in. Here is what I wrote earlier in Project 803 Step 3. Full of rich composted matter, sand and topsoil. I sent a sample off the Soil Laboratory at Texas A&M for testing. It is a good idea to test your soil before starting [...]

My Ficus pumila has fruit

August 28, 2009
ficus-pumila-fruit

My creeping fig Ficus pumila in the Moraceae (Mulberry) family has produced fruit! Fruit is rarely seen on this plant indoors, but mine has taken over the cedar fence on the west side of my garden. Just as is described on Floridata.com, (which did not mention fruiting, but other sites say it is rare and not edible) when the plant reaches it vertical limit, it creates adult branches that extend horizontally. I have noticed that this summer, and at first thought is was a different plant coming over the back of the fence. The leaves are much larger and feel leathery. This photo below illustrates this, as you can see both kinds of leaves.

Urban Water Lilies by Jacqueline D’Elia

lindsey-woods-shot

To round out my water lily posts this week, I thought I would share a little essay I wrote in 2000 for my college English Composition class. If I remember correctly, the essay assignment was creating visual imagery with words. Enjoy! Seeking solace from the relentless chaos of city life, more homeowners are enjoying the simple [...]

Out of Body Experience For This Cicada

August 26, 2009
cicada-2009-2

I am still trying to learn how to use my new camera, the Canon Rebel XSI. I am having a lot of fun experimenting with different settings. I went ahead and got the macro lens too, which is really amazing for these close-up shots. Cicadas are out in force this month in my Houston neighborhood [...]

Yuck! What is That?

August 26, 2009
caterpillar-eating-lilypad

These caterpillars (Armyworms) are eating my waterlilies alive in the stock tank.  If you know what type of caterpillar this is, please post it in the comments section. Thank you Wizzie Brown for letting us know. As if it wasn’t bad enough that they are eating the lilies, they are leaving even more disgusting droppings [...]
